Statement from Peter Goldwasser, Executive Director, Together for Safer Roads (TSR), on the 4th Global Ministry Conference on Road Safety

For Immediate Release
February 20, 2025

“This week, global leaders in road safety gathered in Marrakech, Morocco, for the 4th Global Ministry Conference on Road Safety at a critical moment in our collective efforts to prevent traffic crashes, injuries, and fatalities. Together for Safer Roads is honored to support this important forum, and I am proud to be participating in the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) panel discussing the critical role that cross-sector partnerships can play in improving road safety.

“Over 1.3 million people die each year in road crashes, making it the leading cause of death for those aged 5-29. Workplace-related crashes are a significant and preventable contributor to road fatalities worldwide. Through TSR’s innovative programs and cross-sector partnerships, we are equipping businesses with the tools and knowledge needed to improve fleet safety, reduce risks, and ultimately save lives. I look forward to sharing insights from our initiatives that demonstrate the real-world impact of our collaborative approach.

“This year’s conference brings together over 2,500 attendees from more than 190 countries, including heads of national road safety agencies, UN officials, business representatives, academia, and organizations dedicated to preventing road fatalities. We extend our gratitude to all attendees, speakers, and sponsors of this important convening.

“The conference also saw significant new support pledged for the FIA Road Safety Index. The index provides organizations and governments with a structured process to measure and improve their road safety impacts — similar to tracking sustainability progress. Together for Safer Roads is proud to be actively collaborating with the FIA to raise awareness and encourage participation in this important initiative. Sitting at the intersection of private industry and road safety, TSR is in a unique position to help our members engage with the Index, strengthening their operational safety systems and procedures.

“We commend the Government of Morocco and the World Health Organization for convening this vital conference and bringing global attention to the need for stronger road safety governance, private sector engagement, and data-driven interventions. With five years remaining in the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety, we must use opportunities like this to align our efforts and commit to evidence-based solutions that protect all road users. Together, we can create a safer future for everyone.”

More about the “Cross-Sector Partnerships: Delivering Road Safety Results” session:

Achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development requires effective collaboration across all sectors of society. Public-private partnerships (PPPs) are crucial in mobilizing the necessary resources, expertise, and innovation to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The United Nations commitment to PPPs is articulated in SDG 17, which emphasizes the need to “strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.” This goal highlights the importance of multi-stakeholder partnerships that mobilize and share knowledge, expertise, technology, and financial resources to support the achievement of the SDGs, particularly in developing countries.

This session will present some UNITAR initiatives implemented in collaboration with private sector partners aimed at strengthening government officials’ and key stakeholders’ capacities to improve road safety through concrete and targeted interventions.
